Fixed-price trade law

Japanese: 定高貿易法 - さだめだかぼうえきほう

A system that was adopted in Nagasaki trade from 1685 to 1858 (Jokyo 2 to Ansei 5) during the Edo period, which set a certain upper limit (fixed amount) on the annual trading amount settled in gold and silver. In response to the sudden increase in Chinese ships arriving at Japan, the shogunate limited the annual trading amount of Chinese ships to 6,000 kanme of silver and Dutch ships to 50,000 ryo of gold (3,400 kanme of silver) from 1685 in order to curb the import price and the outflow of gold and silver, and allocated a trading amount for each Chinese ship up to the fixed amount, taking into consideration the amount of cargo loaded, the place of departure, and the number of crew members of each ship, and made them return the remaining amount.

江戸時代の長崎貿易で1685‐1858年(貞享2‐安政5)にとられた，金･銀建てで決済する年間の取引額に一定の上限〈定高〉を設けた制度。幕府は来航唐船の激増を契機に，輸入単価･金銀流出の抑制のために，1685年から唐船は年間取引額を銀で6000貫目，オランダ船は金で5万両(銀3400貫目)に限り，唐船へは各船の積荷高･出帆地･乗組員数などを勘案して1艘ごとの取引高を定高に達するまで割り付け，残りは積み戻らせた。
