American politician, financier, diplomat, and Indian scholar. Born in Geneva, Switzerland, he came to America at the age of 19 and settled in western Pennsylvania. Elected to the state House of Representatives from 1790 to 1792, he was known as a financial expert and worked hard to end the Whiskey Rebellion peacefully. He served in the US House of Representatives from 1795 to 1801 and was an active Republican leader. He was then appointed Secretary of the Treasury by President Jefferson in 1801, where he made a great contribution to financial reform and financial management during a period of worsening international relations.

アメリカの政治家，財政家，外交官，インディアン研究家。スイスのジュネーブに生まれたが，19歳のときアメリカに渡来，ペンシルベニア西部に定住した。1790‐92年州議会下院議員に選出され，とくに財政通として知られ，また，ウィスキー一揆(1794)の際にはその平穏な終息に尽力した。1795‐1801年連邦議会下院議員となり，リパブリカンの指導者として活躍し，ついで，01年ジェファソン大統領により財務長官に任命され，財政改革ならびに国際関係悪化の時期の財政運営に大いに貢献した。
