Also known as a comet seeker, this telescope is conveniently designed to discover new comets, whose appearance is uncertain. The optical system has a low magnification to obtain a wide field of view. The exit pupil must be around 7 mm to make it easier to see the spread light spots, and the aperture must be large enough not to miss dark celestial objects. Most typical telescopes have an aperture of 10 to 20 cm and a magnification of 15 to 30 times. A mount has been devised that keeps the position of the eyepiece from changing much, so that the telescope can be pointed anywhere in the sky without moving the body.
