Hafu - Hafu

Japanese:
Hafu - Hafu

The triangular parts at both ends of a gabled or hip-and-gabled roof. It is also written as hafu. The board attached to the hypotenuse of the triangle is called a gable board, and its apex is called an ogami. A gable board is a decorative board attached to hide the rafters of the gable. A decoration attached below the rafter to hide the end of the ridgepole is called a gegyo, and a decoration in the middle of the gable board that hides the end of the ridgepole is called a kudarigegyo. The triangular part cut in the middle of the roof curve is also called a suehafu or chidorihafu. When a eaves is extended from the tip of the roof curve, the gable part is called a sugaruhafu. There are three types of gables: straight gables, curved gables with both ends curving up, and upturned gables with an upward curve in the middle. The inverted gables often seen at entrances such as the front door are called kara gables.
