Formalin (English spelling)

It is an aqueous solution of formaldehyde, and in the Japanese Pharmacopoeia it contains 35-38% formaldehyde with 5-13% methanol (methyl alcohol) added to prevent polymerization. It is one of the most well-known disinfectants, and is used as formalin water or gas to disinfect medical instruments, items, hospital rooms, etc. In addition, a 40-70 times solution of formaldehyde in water or ethanol (ethyl alcohol) is applied several times a day to stop sweating and eliminate odors in cases of hyperhidrosis and axillary odor. It is also used to detoxify bacterial toxins when making toxoids.

ホルムアルデヒドの水溶液で、日本薬局方ではホルムアルデヒドを35～38％含み、重合を避けるためにメタノール（メチルアルコール）を5～13％添加したものをいう。代表的な消毒剤の一つで、医療用器具・物品、病室などの消毒にホルマリン水またはホルマリンガスとして使用される。また、多汗症や腋臭(えきしゅう)症（わきが）の止汗や臭気除去には40～70倍の水またはエタノール（エチルアルコール）溶液を1日数回塗布する。トキソイドをつくるときに細菌毒素の無毒化にも使われる。
