Morichika Chosokabe - Morichika Chosokabe

A feudal lord in the Azuchi-Momoyama period. Tosa no Kami. Born in Okatoyo, Nagaoka County, Tosa Province (Nankoku City, Kochi Prefecture) as the fourth son of Motochika. His childhood name was Chikumamaru. Uemon Taro. He was determined to be the heir after his older brother Nobuchika died in battle, and after Motochika's death in 1599 (Keicho 4), he took over as head of the family and ruled the entire Tosa province. He served in the Odawara Expedition and the Bunroku-Keicho Wars, and was defeated in the Battle of Sekigahara. After returning home, he apologized to Tokugawa Ieyasu through Ii Naomasa. However, he incurred Ieyasu's wrath for killing his older brother, Tsuno Chikatada, and had his territory confiscated.

After coming to Kyoto, he lived in seclusion in Yanagigazushi in Kamitachiuri (Kamigyo Ward, Kyoto City) and took the name Oiwa Yumu, spending 14 years as a teacher at a temple school. He entered Osaka Castle during the Winter Siege of Osaka, and during the Summer Siege he marched to Yao and fought against Todo Takatora, but was outflanked by the army of Ii Naotaka and retreated. After the fall of Osaka Castle, he was captured by a retainer of Hachisuka, and was killed on May 15, 1615 at Rokujo-gawara in Kyoto. His posthumous name was Gen'o Sohon. He was buried at Renko-ji Temple in Gojo-ji-cho, Kyoto (Shimogyo Ward). The Chosokabe clan was wiped out with Morichika as the last of them.
