Camberwell beauty

Japanese: キベリタテハ - きべりたては(英語表記)camberwell beauty
Camberwell beauty
An insect of the Nymphalidae family of the Lepidoptera order. In the UK it is called the Camberwell beauty, and in the US it is called the mourning cloak. It is a medium-sized Nymphalidae butterfly with a wingspan of about 7cm. Females are slightly larger than males and have rounded wings. The surface of the wings is a deep chocolate colour, and they were given this name because of the pale yellow band on the outer edge. They are widely distributed in the Northern Hemisphere, and in Japan they are found in central and eastern Honshu and Hokkaido. In Honshu they live in areas of 1000-2000m above sea level where there are white birch and Erman's birch trees, but in Hokkaido they can also be found in lowlands, resting on exposed rocks and the ground.
