This is what is commonly known as cracks or chapped skin. Linear cracks that extend from the deep epidermis to the dermis. In severe cases, the flesh inside becomes visible and the patient complains of intense pain. This is a skin disorder that is likely to occur in the cold season, when the skin becomes dry due to the cold and blood vessels constrict, preventing blood from reaching the surface of the skin. As a result, moisture is lost from the stratum corneum, making the skin more susceptible to cracks. With the widespread use of neutral detergents, fat is removed from the surface of the skin when doing wet work, making the skin even more susceptible to cracks, but recently the severe cracks of the past have not been seen.

俗にいうひび，あかぎれのこと。皮膚の表皮深層から真皮に及ぶ線状の割れ目。重症の場合は中の肉が見え激しい痛みを訴える。寒い季節に生じやすい皮膚障害の一つで，寒冷のため皮膚が乾燥し，血管も収縮して皮膚表面に血液が届かなくなり，その結果，角質から水分がなくなって，ひび割れができやすくなる。中性洗剤の普及で水仕事の際皮膚表面の脂肪を取ってしまうため，さらにひびができやすくなるが，最近は以前のようなひどい亀裂はみられなくなった。
