A bird of the Psittacidae family (illustration). Total length is about 50 cm. A typical parrot along with the common cockatoo, it is entirely white. The tips of its long crest feathers are shiny yellow, and when it spreads its wings and tail, the feathers on the undersides are also pale yellow. It is found in Australia, New Guinea and the surrounding islands. It lives in pairs or small flocks in forests and sparse woodlands, and forms large flocks in the non-breeding season. It may also form mixed flocks with Galahs and Scarlet Cockatoos. When the flock forages on the ground in the open, several birds perch in nearby trees to keep watch, and if an enemy approaches, they will make an alarm call to alert the rest of the flock.
