American political scientist. Born in Canada. Graduated from the University of Toronto. Moved to the United States in 1943. Obtained his PhD from Harvard University in 1947. Became an assistant professor at the University of Chicago in the same year, an associate professor in 1953, and a professor in 1955. He served as president of the American Political Science Association from 1968 to 1969, and chairman of the Research and Planning Committee of the American Academy of Sciences from 1979 to 1982. He presented the general framework of political analysis as a political system, explaining the process of input-transformation-output-feedback. He also encouraged practical interest among political scientists with his thesis "A new revolution in political science." His major works include the classic The political system (1953), A framework for political analysis (1965), A systems analysis of political life (1965), Varieties of political theory (1966), and The analysis of political structure (1990).
