...The tribal art of New Guinea developed on the basis of ancestor worship and spirit beliefs, and is generally characterized by fantasy and dynamism, but different tribes have different regional styles. In the northwestern part of the island, small wooden carved ancestor figures (called korwars) with large heads and squatting postures are found, which are unique to this region. It was pointed out that the short chin protruding from the front of the figure resembles the chin of a human figure seen in Khmer art in Cambodia, and a theory was put forward that the korwar originated in the west, but this is now rejected because the headdresses characteristic of Khmer art are not found. *Some of the terminology explanations that mention "korwar" are listed below.
