A rail vehicle equipped with a steam, gasoline, or diesel engine and capable of running under its own power. It has been used for commuting and short distances on non-electrified sections, taking advantage of its ability to operate as a single unit. However, since the development of torque converters that allow for the overall control of multiple cars, it has become possible to operate it in normal train configurations, and it is now used for long distances, including express and limited express trains.

蒸気，ガソリン，ディーゼルなどの機関を車体に装備し，自力で走行できる鉄道車両。非電化区間で，単車運転ができることを利用して，通勤用，近距離用として使われてきたが，液体変速機 (トルクコンバータ ) を用いて多数の車両についての総括制御ができるようになってからは，通常の車両編成も可能となり，長距離用として特急，急行などにも使われている。
