...The delta on the north bank of the Yangtze River grew slower than the delta on the south bank, and during the Han dynasty this area had only just become land. Salt was produced in the low marshes on the coast, and in the early Western Han dynasty, King Liu Bi of Wu (215-154 BC) developed the area and opened a canal for irrigation (the Yun-Yan Canal, the precursor to the present-day Yang-Yang Canal). At the same time, Hailing County was established here, and although it was abolished for a time, it continued to exist until the Yuan dynasty. ...
