A city in the copper-producing region of Zambia in south-central Africa. It is located 268 km north of the capital, Lusaka. It has a population of 305,000 (estimated in 2002). It developed along with the Nkana copper mine of Anglo American Limited, a South African company (nationalized in 1969 and renamed Nchanga Consolidated Copper Mines Limited). It is now a mining town and a commercial center, a modern city with shops, cinemas, TV and radio stations, and various sports facilities.
