Kitwe (English spelling)

Japanese: キトウェ - きとうぇ（英語表記）Kitwe

A city in the copper-producing region of Zambia in south-central Africa. It is located 268 km north of the capital, Lusaka. It has a population of 305,000 (estimated in 2002). It developed along with the Nkana copper mine of Anglo American Limited, a South African company (nationalized in 1969 and renamed Nchanga Consolidated Copper Mines Limited). It is now a mining town and a commercial center, a modern city with shops, cinemas, TV and radio stations, and various sports facilities.

アフリカ中南部、ザンビアの産銅地帯にある都市。首都ルサカの北268キロメートルに位置する。人口30万5000（2002推計）。南アフリカ共和国系のアングロ・アメリカン社（1969年以降国有化されヌチャンガ・コンソリディテッド銅山会社となる）のヌカナ銅山とともに発展。現在は鉱山町であるとともに商業の中心地となり、商店、映画館、テレビ・ラジオ局、各種スポーツ施設を備えた近代都市となっている。
