A river that flows through northeastern South Africa. It is the largest tributary of the Orange River, with a length of 1,260 km and a drainage area of 140,000 km2. It originates on the plateau at an altitude of 1,600 m in the southeastern part of the Transvaal Province, flows almost west-southwest, and joins the Orange River west of Douglas. It is an important river for agriculture and livestock in north-central South Africa. The Vaal Dam, built in 1936 in the middle reaches of the river, serves as a source of water and electricity for industries in the Witwatersrand region.
