Vaal River

Japanese: バール[川]（英語表記）Vaal River

A river that flows through northeastern South Africa. It is the largest tributary of the Orange River, with a length of 1,260 km and a drainage area of 140,000 km2. It originates on the plateau at an altitude of 1,600 m in the southeastern part of the Transvaal Province, flows almost west-southwest, and joins the Orange River west of Douglas. It is an important river for agriculture and livestock in north-central South Africa. The Vaal Dam, built in 1936 in the middle reaches of the river, serves as a source of water and electricity for industries in the Witwatersrand region. The 163 km2 artificial lake also attracts tourists.

南アフリカ共和国北東部を流れる川。オレンジ川最大の支流で，長さ1260km，流域面積14万km2。トランスバール州南東部，標高1600mの高原面に発し，ほぼ西南西に流れ，ダグラス西方でオレンジ川に合流する。南ア共和国中北部の農牧業にとって重要な川である。中流に1936年に建設されたバール･ダムは用水源のほか，電力源としてウィットウォーターズランド地域の工業にも役だっている。また163km2の人造湖は観光客を集める。
