Kitou [village] - Kitou

Japanese: 木頭[村] - きとう

A village in Naka District, southwestern Tokushima Prefecture. Population 1948 (1995). Located on the south side of Mt. Tsurugi, it occupies the uppermost part of the main Naka River. It borders Kochi Prefecture to the west and south, and has the second largest area (232.1 km2) in the prefecture after Anan City. Along with Iya, it was known as a hidden region of Awa, but the living environment changed dramatically when the construction of National Route 195 progressed and a tunnel was opened at Yotsusado Pass on the border with Kochi Prefecture. The area is covered by a large forest of cedars, and it is the center of Kito forestry. Timber, which was previously transported by raft, was switched to land transport with the construction of a dam as part of the Naka River Comprehensive Development Project.

徳島県南西部，那賀郡の村。人口1948(1995)。剣山の南側に位置し，那賀川本流の最上部を占める。西と南は高知県に接し，県内では阿南市に次ぐ広い面積(232.1km2)を有する。祖谷（いや）とともに阿波の秘境と称されたが，国道195号線の整備が進み，高知県境の四ッ足堂峠にトンネルが開通するとともに生活環境は一変した。林野率は高く，全山が杉の大森林地帯で，木頭林業の中心地をなす。従来いかだ流しされていた木材は那賀川総合開発事業によるダムの出現とともに陸送に切り替えられた。
