Old antique

A haiku poet from the mid-Edo period. His family name was Takai. His childhood name was Kohachiro. His previous pen name was Raifu. His other pen names were Shinmei, Shunyaro, Koshisha, and Yahantei III. He was from Kyoto. He first learned haiku from his father, Kikei, but after his father's death, at the age of 29, he became a disciple of Buson, and made a name for himself by compiling and publishing works such as "Sono Yukikage," "Akegarasu," and "Zoku Akegarasu." He was the leading disciple of Buson, and together with Buson, he played a leading role in the revival of haiku.

After Buson's death, he retired from the haiku world for a time, but in 1785 (Tenmei 5) he succeeded Buson at the urging of Ryota in Edo, taking the name Yahantei III. After his house was burned down in the Great Tenmei Fire in 1788, he moved around among his disciples in the Kyoto and Osaka regions, and passed away on October 23rd of the following year, the first year of the Kansei era, at the home of Shisen in Itami, while drinking cups of sake. His style is delicate and graceful, and has a unique charm.

江戸中期の俳人。姓は高井。幼名小八郎。前号雷夫(らいふ)。別号晋明(しんめい)、春夜楼(しゅんやろう)、高子舎(こうししゃ)、3世夜半亭(やはんてい)等。京都の人。初め父几圭(きけい)に俳諧(はいかい)を学んだが、父の没後、29歳のとき蕪村(ぶそん)に入門、『其(その)雪影』『あけ烏(がらす)』『続明(あけ)がらす』などを編纂(へんさん)、刊行して名をあげた。蕪村門下の筆頭格で、蕪村とともに中興期俳諧において指導的役割を果たした。

　蕪村没後、一時俳壇から退いたが、1785年（天明5）江戸の蓼太(りょうた)の勧めによって蕪村の跡を継ぎ、夜半亭3世を名のった。1788年いわゆる天明(てんめい)の大火に類焼してからは京坂地方の門弟の間を転々とし、翌寛政(かんせい)元年の10月23日、伊丹(いたみ)の士川(しせん)宅で、酒杯を重ねるうちに没したという。作風は繊細優婉(ゆうえん)で、独特の魅力がある。
