In 1815, Prout proposed the hypothesis that "the building block of all atoms is the hydrogen atom." However, because there are elements with odd atomic weights, such as chlorine, this hypothesis was dismissed as incorrect and was left unadjusted. However, after the discovery of isotopes, if this "hydrogen atom" is replaced with a "nucleon" (= protons plus neutrons), this expression became perfectly accurate (however, it is still referred to as a "hypothesis").
