Namur - Namur (English spelling)

The capital of the province of Namur in south-central Belgium. Population 105,393 (2002). The government of the Walloon region, one of the three regions that make up the federation, is located here. It has a strong regional trading city character, with paper, flour and canning industries in the suburbs. Located at the confluence of the Sambre and Meuse rivers, the ruins of the castle of the Count of Namur on a hill overlooking the river valley have been fortified, and since the end of the 17th century it has been the site of many battles. During World War I, it was the base of the anti-German resistance movement, but was damaged by German bombings. The city in the lower river valley has a 14th century bell tower, Saint-Aubin Cathedral and an archaeological museum.

The canton of Namur has an area of 3,666 square kilometers and a population of 447,775 (2002). It is a Walloon region bordering France. Apart from the industrial areas in the river valley, the main industries are agriculture and livestock farming. On the Hezbeille plateau in the north, wheat and sugar beets are cultivated, while the Condelot plateau on the south side of the valley is a mixed agricultural area where oats and other feed crops are cultivated and beef cattle are raised. The Ardennes plateau is a forested area, and is a popular tourist resort with holiday homes.
