A village in Kitasaku District, eastern Nagano Prefecture. Population 5,448 (1995). Located in the western Saku Basin, on the south bank of the Chikuma River, it borders Komoro City to the east. The Kakuma River flows north through the center and joins the Chikuma River. The eastern bank of the Kakuma River is the northern half of the Mimakihara Plateau, where an ancient government pasture was located, and Yaehara on the west bank is a new rice field area reclaimed in the early modern period. Agriculture is the main industry, and in addition to rice and vegetable cultivation, in recent years ginseng and flower cultivation and livestock farming have also become popular. The proportion of people engaged in agriculture is over 30%, the highest in the district, but most are part-time farmers, and many commute to Komoro City, Ueda City, and other cities. 長野県東部,北佐久郡の村。人口5448(1995)。佐久盆地西部,千曲川南岸に位置し,東は小諸市に接する。中央部を鹿曲(かくま)川が北流し,千曲川に合流する。鹿曲川の東岸部は古代の官牧があった御牧原台地の北半部にあたり,西岸の八重原は近世に開墾された新田地帯である。農業が基幹産業で,米作,野菜栽培などに加えて近年はチョウセンニンジン,花卉などの栽培や畜産も盛んになってきた。農業従事者の割合は3割をこえ郡内では最も高いが,ほとんどが兼業農家で,小諸市や上田市などへの通勤者が多い。
