It is a family of 300 genera and 5,000 species, and is the third largest dicotyledonous plant family after Asteraceae, Fabaceae, and Rubiaceae. Its main distribution is in the tropical regions of Africa and America, but it is also widely distributed in temperate zones and is not found in the cold or alpine zones.
