...the language of the Vietnamese people who live mainly in the north and south delta regions of Vietnam and the eastern coastal plains of central Vietnam. Its former name was Annamese. It is also abbreviated to Etsu (in the Vietnam-Japan Dictionary). It is divided into three dialects, the north, the central, and the south, but the dialectal differences are not so great because the history of the Vietnamese's southward advance is relatively recent. The tones are six in the north, but five in the south, and the number of consonant differences at the end of syllables (-m, -n, -ɲ, -; -p, -t, -c, -k; -w, -j, -zero in the northern dialect) is also fewer in the south, but the southern dialect retains the old distinctions in initial consonants.
