Also called the f- value. A quantity used in spectroscopy to analyze spectra, this number corresponds to the number of oscillators with a specific frequency when atoms are considered as classical harmonic oscillators to discuss the absorption, emission, and dispersion of light. The absorption of light near visible light by atoms is mainly due to the dipole interaction between the atomic electrons and the electric field of the light, and is determined by the transition caused by light from the atom's ground state 1 (energy E ₁ , wave function Ψ ₁ ) to various excited states i ( E _i ,Ψ _i ). If the mass of the electron is m and the Planck constant is h , the oscillator strength f _{1 i} between states 1 and i is given by the dimensionless quantity,

f値ともいう。分光学でスペクトルの解析に用いられる量で，原子を古典的な調和振動子とみなして光の吸収，放出，分散を論ずるとき，特定の振動数をもった振動子の個数に対応する数。原子による可視光付近の光の吸収は，主として原子内電子と光の電場による双極子相互作用に起因し，原子の基底状態1(エネルギーE₁，波動関数Ψ₁)から種々の励起状態i(E_i,Ψ_i)への光による遷移によって決まる。電子の質量をm，プランク定数をhとすると，状態1,i間の振動子強度f_1iは無次元の量，で与えられる。
