Issando Eishun

…He was born in Matsumoto, Shinshu, and went to Edo to study under Nara Juei. He was commonly known as Nara Taishichi, and later called Sugiura Sen'emon. At Juei's recommendation, he was allowed to use the character "Ei" by the fourth head of the Nara family, Toshinaga, and called himself Issando Eishun. He shaved his head and took the name Jōi. The distinctive feature of his work is the expression of patterns using the Shishi Aibori technique he invented. This is a technique in which the outline of the part to be the pattern is carved one level lower on the base, and the pattern itself is carved into a thin wall, so that the pattern does not rise higher than the base. …
