Toyohashi Plain - Toyohashi Heiya

Japanese:
Toyohashi Plain - Toyohashi Heiya

A plain in the southeastern part of Aichi Prefecture, downstream of the Toyokawa River, facing Mikawa Bay. It is also called the East Mikawa Plain. With an area of 772 square kilometers, it spans five cities: Toyohashi, Gamagori, Toyokawa, Shinshiro, and Tahara. It is an important plain in the prefecture with a thriving economy and culture, along with the Owari Plain and Okazaki Plain, and is said to be an advanced agricultural region. The Toyokawa River runs through the center of the plain, and river terraces have been formed along the coast, with Takashibara and Tenpakubara on the terraces. The downstream is the Toyokawa floodplain, an alluvial delta, and the area near the mouth of the river facing Mikawa Bay (Atsumi Bay) is shallow, and reclaimed land has been developed. The central city, Toyohashi, was formerly the castle town of the Yoshida clan, the former Yoshida post station on the Tokaido road, and a base for shipping on Mikawa Bay and the Toyokawa River. However, with the development of Mikawa Port and the coastal industrial zone, it is now transforming into a city where agriculture and industry coexist.
