Poisoning from ethyl alcohol can be divided into acute and chronic poisoning, but in recent times the term chronic poisoning has been gradually phased out of use. This is because when ethyl alcohol contained in alcoholic beverages is consumed continuously, exceeding the normal amount or repeated abnormal consumption (alcohol abuse), a person is unable to stop drinking alcoholic beverages. This is thought to be caused by a biological change different from that of acute poisoning, and so the term dependence has been proposed by a WHO expert committee to distinguish this from symptoms of intoxication. Thus, mental and physical disorders caused by alcohol consumption are broadly divided into acute alcohol poisoning and alcohol dependence, and it is said that alcohol psychosis occurs on the basis of alcohol dependence.
