Alexander III - Alexander
Pope of the Roman Catholic Church (1159-1181). Former professor of canon law at the University of Bologna. He was at odds with the German Emperor Frederick I, and the Imperial faction appointed antipopes Victor IV and Paschal III, resulting in a schism in the church that lasted 17 years. He is known as the protector of Thomas Becket and the convener of the Third Lateran Council in 1179.
