A state in the southeast of India facing the Bay of Bengal. It has an area of 130,000 km2 and a population of 55.86 million (1991). Its capital is Madras. The state's official language is Tamil, and the majority of its residents are ethnic Tamils of Dravidian descent. It is a base for the Dravidian nationalist movement, which denies the superiority of the Aryan people of North India, as seen in the fierce opposition to Hindi being made the sole official language of the federation (1965) and the emergence of the Dravidian Progressive League (DMK), which defeated the Indian National Congress Party to take power in the state (1967). The state's name, which means "land of the Tamil people," was adopted under the DMK government in 1968, replacing the former name of Madras State.
