An old town in the southern part of the Shimabara Peninsula, Minamitakaki District, Nagasaki Prefecture. The Shimabara Railway runs through the town. Settlements developed in the tributaries of the Arima River, with prominent terraced fields and rice terraces. The town produces a lot of potatoes, rice, strawberries, and mandarin oranges. The site of the Arima Seminario, established in 1580 by Christian feudal lord Arima Harunobu, is here. In March 2006, the town merged with the towns of Katsusa, Kuchinotsu, Minamiarima, Nishiarie, Arie, Futsu, and Fukae in Minamitakaki District to become a city, Minamishimabara. 26.13 km2 . 4,421 people (2003). 長崎県南高来(みなみたかき)郡,島原半島南部の旧町。島原鉄道が通じる。有馬川の支谷に集落が発達,段々畑や棚田が顕著。ジャガイモ,米,イチゴ,ミカンを多産。1580年,キリシタン大名有馬晴信によって設けられた有馬セミナリヨ跡がある。2006年3月,南高来郡加津佐町,口之津町,南有馬町,西有家町,有家町,布津町,深江町と合併し市制,南島原市となる。26.13km2。4421人(2003)。
