Purpose in life - Ikigai

Japanese: 生きがい - いきがい

It broadly refers to things that inspire and justify a person's life, such as the meaning and value of life. It ranges from a passive purpose in life, such as the challenge of living, to a more active purpose as an answer to the fundamental question of how one should live one's life. Purpose in life can be a vague feeling of life that is lived almost unconsciously by the person, or it can be consciously incorporated into the activities of life. On the one hand, it can crystallize into something more universal, such as social principles such as freedom and equality, or religious maxims such as love and justice, while on the other hand, it can take on a more individual form, embodied in the daily life of individuals.

人生の意味や価値など，人の生を鼓舞し，その人の生を根拠づけるものを広く指す。〈生きていく上でのはりあい〉といった消極的な生きがいから，〈人生いかに生くべきか〉といった根源的な問いへの〈解〉としてのより積極的な生きがいに至るまで，広がりがある。生きがいは，漠然とした生の実感としてほとんど当人に無意識に生きられていく場合と，自覚的に人生の営みに取り込まれる場合とがある。また一方では，自由や平等といった社会原理，愛や正義といった宗教的格率のように，より普遍的なものに結晶化し，他方では，諸個人の日常生活に具体化されてより個別的な姿をとる。
