…The Edo Shogunate made it compulsory for each sect to attend school to study the doctrine, but also each sect developed a rapid trend of Buddhist studies centered on the doctrine, and required that sects study for a certain period of time in order to become chief priests. The main examples are the Jodo sect's Chinzei school, which established dansho in various places in the Middle Ages, and the Zojoji Son'o in the early Edo period, in conspiracy with Tokugawa Ieyasu, established the so-called Kanto 18 danrin, consisting of 5 danrin in Edo, such as Zojoji in Shiba and Denzuin in Koishikawa, and 13 danrin in the countryside, such as Komyo-ji in Kamakura and Shogan-ji in Musashinosu. The Seizan school of the same sect also established 7 danrin, such as Komyo-ji in Yamashiro and Zenrin-ji in Kyoto, and the Nagoe school of the same sect also opened 2 danrin, such as Enzu-ji in Osawa, Shimotsuke. …
