Admission tax - Nyujozei

Admission tax - Nyujozei

A national tax levied on admission fees for movies, plays, entertainment, music, sports, shows, horse racing, bicycle racing, etc. It was abolished when the consumption tax was introduced in April 1989 (Heisei 1). The taxpayer of the admission tax was the person who received the admission fee. The tax rate was set for each individual taxable item; for example, a 10% tax rate was levied on admission fees over 2,000 yen for movies, 5,000 yen for plays, and 30 yen for horse racing. Tax exemptions were applied to performances held by specific individuals with the purpose of spending net profits on education or social work.

The admission tax used to be a local tax called the viewing tax, but was transferred to a national tax in 1938 (Showa 13) and its name was changed to admission tax. After the Second World War, it was transferred to a local tax in 1948 (Showa 23), but was transferred back to a national tax in 1954, a status that continued until it was abolished in 1989. The amount of tax revenue was small, at 5 billion yen in fiscal 1985 (Showa 60), accounting for just 0.01% of the total national tax for that year of 39.15 trillion yen.
