It is the central city of the southern Northern Territory, in the center of the Australian continent. It has a population of 20,000 (1991). It is located in the arid zone east of the MacDonnell Ranges. Its annual precipitation is 257 mm. It is connected by road and air routes to Darwin, about 1,500 km to the north, and Adelaide, about 1,700 km to the south. It is the terminus of a railway line that branches off from the transcontinental railroad and runs north (opened in 1929, new line opened in 1980). It is the center of a regional air route network that connects various parts of the southern Northern Territory, including Ayers Rock, and is also a base for tourism.
