The 99 Princes

Japanese: 九十九王子 - くじゅうくおうじ

("99" means a large number) Starting from Kubotsu (Chuo Ward, Osaka City) at the end of the Yodo River, along the Kii Road from Hongu, Shingu to Nachi Shrine, there is one Oji (sub-shrine of Kumano Gongen) located approximately every 31 cho. 99 shrines. 99 Oji shrines. [Additional information] "Genpei Seisuiki-9" says that "There are 80 Oji shrines from Kubotsu Oji," and "Kumano 99 Oji-ki" counts 82 shrines, and if we combine those found in documents from before the Muromachi period, there are a total of 98 shrines. These are commonly called Kumano 99.

(「九十九」は数の多いことの意) 淀川尻の窪津（大阪市中央区）を起点とし、紀伊路に沿って本宮、新宮から那智社までの間、おおよそ三一町余に一つずつ置いた王子（熊野権現の末社）。九十九所。九十九王子社。[補注]「源平盛衰記‐九」には「窪津王子より八十余所におはします王子王子」といい「熊野九十九王子記」には八二か所と数え、室町時代以前の文献に見えたものを総合するとすべてで九八か所ある。これを俗に熊野九十九という。
