A city in northeastern Saitama Prefecture. It was incorporated as a city in 1954. It occupies the alluvial plain on the south bank of the Tone River. The former Kazo-cho area in the center developed as a post town and market town on a side road connecting the Nakasendo and Oshu Kaido. It is served by the Tobu Isesaki Line and the Tohoku Expressway. It is the number one producer of carp streamers in Japan, and kendo and judo uniforms are also local specialties. With the opening of the Tohoku Expressway in the 1970s, industrial parks were developed, and precision machinery, general machinery, and electrical machinery industries are thriving. The population has been increasing since 1990. It produces rice, wheat, and strawberries. The Fudoson statue in Fudooka is one of the three major Fudoson statues in the Kanto region. In March 2010, it merged with Kisai-cho, Kitakawabe-cho, and Otone-cho in Kitasaitama-gun. The city suffered damage during the Great East Japan Earthquake. Its area is 133.30 km 2 . 115,002 people (2010).
