Thāna (English spelling)

Japanese: ターナ（英語表記）Thāna

A city located in western India, in the western state of Maharashtra, about 30 km northeast of Mumbai (Bombay). It is the administrative capital of Thana district. It is a satellite city of Mumbai, facing the Thana Channel that leads to Mumbai Port, and is economically part of the Greater Mumbai metropolis. It has developed into an industrial area, with factories producing chemicals, fertilizers, machinery, general goods, cotton textiles, rope, etc. Salt is also produced here. It is the site of one of the oldest Portuguese settlements in India, and flourished as a Portuguese trading port in the 16th and 17th centuries. There are old forts, Jain temples, and the ruins of a cathedral and castle from the Portuguese era. Population: 1,261,517 (2001).
