Cotter - cotter (English spelling)

A wedge used to connect two shafts or rods, inserted at right angles (horizontally) to the longitudinal direction of the shaft. A shaft end machined into a socket shape is inserted into the stepped shaft end, and a cotter is inserted to join the two shafts. The cotter is sloped to prevent it from coming loose. As it is relatively easy to disassemble, can be adjusted, and has a simple structure, it is often used for simple connections of two shafts, such as connecting the connecting rods of internal combustion engines. There are ones that are sloped on one side and ones that are sloped on both sides, and if there is a risk of it coming loose due to vibration, a locking pin is inserted into the cotter to prevent it from coming loose. Since the transmitted force acts in the longitudinal direction of the shaft, a force acts at right angles on the cotter, and it is subjected to bending stress and shear stress.

2本の軸または棒を連結するのに用いられる軸の長手方向に対して直角（横形）に差し込んだ楔(くさび)。段のついた軸端にソケット状に加工した軸端を差し込み、コッターを差し込んで2軸を接合する。コッターには勾配(こうばい)をつけて抜けるのを防いでいる。解体が比較的容易で調節もでき構造が簡単であるため、2軸の簡易連結用に多く用いられ、内燃機関の連接棒の結合などに使用されている。片側傾斜のものと両側傾斜のものとがあり、振動により抜け出る心配のあるときには、コッターに止めピンを差し込み、抜け出ないようにする。伝達力は軸の長手方向に作用するので、コッターには直角方向に力が作用し、曲げ応力と剪断(せんだん)応力を受ける。
