Sarojini Nāydu (English spelling)

Indian politician and poet. Born of Bengali Brahmin descent, her father was the principal of a college in the princely state of Hyderabad. After graduating from the University of Madras, she studied in England. In 1898, she married Naidu, a non-Brahman. After returning to India, she joined the Indian National Congress, and worked with British feminist Besant and others in the movement for self-governance, and for the integration of Hindus and Muslims. She also participated in the women's movement. After Gandhi's non-violent resistance (Satyagraha) struggle in 1919, she was his key advisor. In 1925, she became the first Indian woman to chair the Indian National Congress' Kanpur conference. After independence, she served as the Governor of the United Provinces from 1947 to 1949. She was called the "Nightingale of India" and was known for her excellent English poetry.
