Japanese: ユキホオジロ(雪頰白) - ユキホオジロ（英語表記）snow bunting

A passerine bird of the Bunting family (illustration). Total length is about 17 cm. It is slightly larger than a white-throated sparrow. At first glance it appears whitish. Sexes are different; in the male's summer plumage, the back, wing tips and tail tip are black, and the head, lower back and belly are white. In the male's winter plumage, the head and back are brownish. The female resembles a male in winter. When flying, the bottom half of the wing stands out as white. It breeds in the tundra zone of the Arctic Circle, and migrates south to the mid-latitudes of the Northern Hemisphere in winter. It migrates to Japan as a winter bird and can be seen in northern Japan, but is not common outside of eastern Hokkaido.
