Pencil Juniper - Pencil Juniper

A coniferous tree of the Cupressaceae family (classification based on molecular phylogeny: Cupressaceae). Also known as Pencil Tree. It grows 12-30 meters tall. The crown is pyramidal. The bark is gray-brown or reddish brown. Young leaves are needle-like, 3-6 mm long, while older branches are scaly, about 1.5 mm long. The fruit is blackish blue with white powder, 5 mm in diameter, 3-6 mm long. The wood is homogenous, easy to sharpen, and fragrant, and is used for pencils, hence the name. It is also used for crafts, barrels, plywood, etc. The oil from the wood is used as zealand oil for microscopes, as a soap fragrance, as a fragrance fixative, and as an adulterant. It is found in the mountainous areas on the east side of the Rocky Mountains in western North America, from Hudson Bay through New Mexico and Texas to Florida, and is exported in large quantities as pencil material. In Japan, there are many horticultural varieties, which are planted in gardens. Propagation is usually by cuttings, but it can also be propagated from seed.

ヒノキ科（分子系統に基づく分類：ヒノキ科）の針葉高木。別名エンピツノキ。高さ12～30メートル。樹冠はピラミッド形。樹皮は灰褐色または赤褐色。若い葉は針状で長さ3～6ミリメートル、古い枝では鱗片(りんぺん)状で長さ約1.5ミリメートル。果実は帯黒青色で白粉を帯び、直径5ミリメートル、長さ3～6ミリメートル。材は均質で削りやすく芳香があり、鉛筆用とするのでこの名がある。このほか、細工物、桶(おけ)、ベニヤ板などにする。材の油を顕微鏡用ツェーデル油、せっけんの香料、香料保留剤、偽和剤とする。北アメリカ西部ロッキー山脈東側、ハドソン湾からニュー・メキシコ、テキサスを経てフロリダに至る山地に分布し、鉛筆用材として大量に輸出される。日本では園芸品種が多数あり、庭園に植栽する。繁殖は普通挿木により、実生(みしょう)も可能。
