Year of death: March 11, 1923 Year of birth: August 18, 1852 (October 1, 1852) A businessman from the Meiji and Taisho periods. He was the second son of Tomiya, who ran a sake brewery in Kawarabe Village, Koma County, Koshu (Nirasaki City). His father was Yazaemon and his mother was Ura. He joined the politically-minded Ono-gumi merchant group but suffered bankruptcy. In 1880, he joined the Tenth Bank, and was recognized by Kurihara Nobuchika and Wakao Ippei, two leading figures in the Yamanashi business world, and in 1885, he participated in the founding of the Koshin Railway. He subsequently served as president of Tokyo Discount Bank and Fuji Paper, as well as directors of Ryomo Railway, Nippon Briquettes, Tokyo Electric Light, and other companies. He had his eye on hydroelectric power generation from the Katsura River early on, and in 1912, he founded the Fuji Minobu Railway (JR Central Minobu Line), and in 1913, he planned the development of the northern foothills of Mount Fuji, and worked hard for the regional development of Yamanashi Prefecture as a businessman from the Koshu zaibatsu.
