...A ceremony to drive away evil spirits, eliminate epidemics, and welcome the new year. One of the annual imperial court events. It was held after the Great Purification Ceremony on New Year's Eve. It is also called Tai-na or Oniya-rai. It originated in ancient China, and according to the Zhou Li, a sorcerer called Ho-soshi wore a bear skin, a mask with four golden eyes, a black robe and a red skirt, and carried a spear and a shield in his hands to drive away epidemic demons. It is said to have been introduced to Japan during the reign of Emperor Mommu.
