Japanese: 明石縮 - あかしちぢみ

〘Noun〙 A high-quality thin fabric made by weaving and shrinking it using raw silk for the warp and strong right- twisted yarn for the weft . It comes in plain, striped, and kasuri patterns and is smooth. A high-quality fabric for women's summer kimonos. It is said to have been created by Hori Masatoshi (Akashi Jiro) during the Kanbun era ( 1661-1673 ). Currently, it is a specialty of Nishijin in Kyoto City and Tokamachi City in Niigata Prefecture. 〘名〙経(たていと)に生糸、緯(よこいと)に右撚(よ)りの強い練り糸を用いて平織りとし、織り縮ませた高級な薄織物。無地、縞、絣(かすり)などがあり、さらさらしている。女性の夏の高級着尺地。寛文年間（一六六一‐七三）、堀将俊（明石次郎）が創製したという。現在は、京都市西陣、新潟県十日町市の特産。あかし。※俳諧・雑巾（1681）夏「明石縮夏をしぞ思ふ櫃がくれ〈口楽〉」
