Greek Revival Style

…Greek Revival (style). Refers to the rediscovery and application of Greek style, seen mainly in neoclassical architecture from the mid-18th century onwards. The start of this movement was the publication in 1762 of The Antiquities of Athens by J. Stuart and N. Revett, based on field research. From this time onwards, a succession of artists and intellectuals visited Greece, and Lord Elgin brought back to England the marble sculptures of the Parthenon in Athens (the Elgin Marbles). …
