A large fishing vessel that catches salmon and trout using many driftnet fishing vessels (called independent vessels) on the high seas of the North Pacific, and then loads the catch for processing and processing. It was also called a salmon and trout factory ship because it had on-board canning facilities and produced canned goods. Currently, most of the catch is processed into frozen products and transported to bases in Japan by refrigerated transport ships. 北洋の公海上で多くの流し網漁船(独航船とよぶ)を用いてサケ,マスをとり,その漁獲物を積み取り,処理・加工する大型漁船。船内に缶詰製造の設備をもち,缶詰を製造していたので,サケ・マス工船とよばれたこともあった。現在では漁獲物のほとんどを冷凍製品に加工し,冷凍運搬船により日本の基地に運んでいる。 母船は8000~9000トンの大きさで,124トン型の独航船43隻とともに船団を組み出漁する。漁場においては,操業する独航船の中心に位置し,その朝漁獲したサケ,マスを魚種別に仕分けたもっこで独航船より受け取る。
