Died April 28, 823. Arab historian from Baghdad. Served under the Abbasid caliphs Harun al-Rashid and Ma'mun. Among his many books, Kitāb al-Maghāzī (The History of the Wars), which describes Muhammad's military activities, remains. Although no other books remain, he contributed to later historiography with his extensive knowledge of the first 200 years of Islam.
