This refrigerator has only a small pump as a moving part, and uses an absorption refrigeration cycle in which heat is transferred by a process in which a solution absorbs refrigerant at low pressure and low temperature, and releases the refrigerant at high temperature and pressure. When a solution is heated, the low boiling point evaporates first, and the concentration of the high boiling point increases. In an absorption refrigerator, the low boiling point becomes the refrigerant, and the high boiling point becomes the absorbent. There are several combinations of refrigerant and absorbent, but the combination of water (refrigerant) and lithium bromide (absorbent) is often used for cooling purposes.

可動部分が小型のポンプだけという冷凍機で，溶液による，低圧低温における冷媒の吸収と高温高圧における冷媒の放出を行う過程によって熱の移動を行う吸収冷凍サイクルを用いる。溶液を加熱する場合は低沸点のものが先に蒸発し，高沸点のものの濃度が上がる。吸収冷凍機では，この低沸点のものが冷媒となり，高沸点のものが吸収剤となる。冷媒と吸収剤の組合せはいくつかあるが，水 (冷媒) と臭化リチウム (吸収剤) の場合が，冷房用などによく用いられている。
