…Folk instruments in mainland Greece include the violin, lauto, floyera (a shakuhachi-like flute), clarinet, zurna (srunai), and dauli (big drum). Greek folk songs are sung in modern colloquial Greek (dimotiki), but one important genre of narrative song is kleftika. This was sung in the 1820s during the War of Liberation, praising the heroic deeds of a bandit called Kleftis who turned the Turks against their rulers. It is characterized by a beatless rhythm and a melismatic style of singing in which each syllable is stretched to create ups and downs. …
