American engineer. Said to be the epitome of an American self-made man. Born in Lawrenceburg, he worked as a fruit seller and a clerk for a steamship company while inventing a diving machine and a device for salvaging and raising sunken ships. At the request of Lincoln, he built armored ships and gunboats in 1861 to protect the Mississippi River from attacks by southern states. He became famous as the designer of Eads Bridge, which was erected across the Mississippi River from 1867 to 1874. This bridge was the first long iron arch bridge. He improved port facilities in Britain, Canada, and Mexico. [Toshio Yamazaki] [References] |Source: Shogakukan Encyclopedia Nipponica About Encyclopedia Nipponica Information | Legend |
