Eads - James Buchanan Eads

American engineer. Said to be the epitome of an American self-made man. Born in Lawrenceburg, he worked as a fruit seller and a clerk for a steamship company while inventing a diving machine and a device for salvaging and raising sunken ships. At the request of Lincoln, he built armored ships and gunboats in 1861 to protect the Mississippi River from attacks by southern states. He became famous as the designer of Eads Bridge, which was erected across the Mississippi River from 1867 to 1874. This bridge was the first long iron arch bridge. He improved port facilities in Britain, Canada, and Mexico.

アメリカの技術者。アメリカ立志伝の典型的人物といわれる。ローレンスバーグに生まれ、果物売り子や汽船会社の書記などをしながら、潜水器、沈没船の救難・引揚げ装置をくふうした。リンカーンの要請で、1861年にミシシッピ川を南部諸州の攻撃から守るため、装甲船、砲船を建造した。1867～1874年ミシシッピ川に架設したイーズ橋の設計者として有名となった。この橋は最初の長大な鉄製アーチ橋である。イギリス、カナダ、メキシコで港湾設備を改良した。
