A town on the Bay of Biscay in the Pyrenees-Atlantiques department in southwestern France. It was once a small fishing port, but after Napoleon III and his wife Eugénie, who loved the small port surrounded by sea cliffs and strange rocks, stayed there, it developed into a high-class summer resort and health resort. It is internationally famous as the "Queen of Health Resorts and Health Resort of Kings." It has a warm climate and the distinctive Basque culture adds to its charm. It is the place where the Secret Treaty of Biarritz was signed with Prussia in 1865. Population 28,887 (1990).
